How to Get Everything You’ve Ever Wanted Before Turning 21: Shawna’s Story

That’s why this month, we decided to sit down with Shawna Smith, an Employee Relations Specialist on our team. Shawna is a go-getter, a full time student, a hard working team member, and fun time! Shawna is from Brooksville, Florida, just around the corner from Sunny Jacksonville. In this one on one conversation, we spoke with Shawna about life, business, and achieving such success all at the age of twenty.

Did you grow up in Brooksville, or did you move around?

“Yes, I lived in Brooksville for 18 years until I moved to Jacksonville, FL”

How would your parents have described you as a kid?

“One word – trouble.”

Were you in any sports or extracurriculars?

“Yes, I played volleyball and softball throughout middle and high school, I was also on homecoming and prom court throughout high school, as well.”

How did that competitive environment help develop you?

“It has made me branch out and take risks and chances I probably wouldn’t have had I not been surrounded by it.”

Did you have any idea you would end up in this field?

“Yes, I’m currently studying Business Administration at College of Central Florida, I always knew I wanted to be a busy woman.”

Where did you work before you knew this was what you wanted?

“I worked at Publix for my first job at sixteen. At eighteen, I worked as a research assistant and at nineteen, I was a chiropractic assistant- none of which were my kind of field.”

What is one life experience that you feel has shaped you?

“Probably losing my dad. It was devastating, but it really made me realize that life is way too short to take it for granted and it should be cherished every day.”

What is something we might not know about you by just looking at you?

“I’m only 20 years old.”

What were your first thoughts when starting with the company?

“The teamwork! Everyone was so outgoing and happy all the time and I loved that they always rubbed it off on me.”

How would you describe the culture at your company?

“Simple- like family.”

What has been your best memory with the company?

“I LOVE the Conference trips!”

What is something you’ve learned through your work you didn’t know before?

“How to keep a good mentality, it will take you further than you think!”

How has this career changed you as a person?

“It has definitely taught me patience and perseverance.”

How would you describe the culture to a prospective job candidate?

“Upbeat, outgoing, and a great mentality!”

What qualities do you look for when recruiting?

“Excited, career oriented, and goal striving.”

What’s one tip you wish more people knew when coming in to interview?

“Attire, attire, attire. If you’re not dressed like you’re ready to take over the world, you won’t.”

How do you personally plan to contribute to the company’s growth?

“Showing up every day and being consistent with my work ethic.”

“Definitely ‘You Are a Badass” by Jen Sincero.”

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

“I honestly don’t have a lot of time for ‘fun’ between work and school but if I ever have a second to relax, I love to read, go to the beach and play with my pups.”
